WebM vs. MP4: Usage Matter
WebM is an open media file format designed for the web. It uses efficient codecs like VP8 and VP9 to deliver high-quality video at low bitrates, making it ideal for streaming on sites like YouTube (in Chrome).
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the industry standard container. It uses H.264 video and AAC audio, which have hardware support on almost every graphic card and mobile chip made in the last 15 years.
Converting WebM to MP4 removes the playback limitations, effectively "unlocking" the video for use outside of a web browser.
