How to Convert Video to GIF?

Create shareable memes and previews. Turn your MP4, MOV, or AVI files into high-quality GIFs in seconds.

1

Upload Video

Select any video file (MP4, MOV, WEBM, etc.) from your device. We handle all common formats.

2

Auto-Encoding

We automatically generate an optimal color palette and convert your video to GIF format.

3

Download GIF

Preview your new animation and download it instantly. Share it on Discord, Slack, or social media.

Pro Tip: File Size

GIFs can become very large. For the best results, try to use short video clips (less than 10 seconds).

Engineering Philosophy

Making Moments Loop.
The Art of GIF Encoding.

Converting a full-color video into a 256-color GIF is an art form. It's about deciding which colors matter most to preserve the soul of the image.

RiseConvert uses a Two-Pass Encoding process with FFmpeg's advanced palettegen filter. First, we scan your entire video to build a custom color palette that represents the specific range of colors in your footage.

Then, we apply this palette using dithering algorithms (like Floyd-Steinberg) to blend pixels, creating the illusion of millions of colors. This results in cinematic GIFs that look smooth, not grainy.

Why Use GIFs?

In the age of 4K video, why does the humble GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) survive? Because it's the universal language of the internet.

Context is Key: A GIF auto-plays. It doesn't require the user to hit a "play" button. It loops, emphasizing the moment. It works in emails, documents, and chat apps where video players often fail.

Creating High-Quality GIFs

The biggest challenge with GIFs is the 256-color limit. If you just take a video and blindly convert it, you get ugly "banding" (blocks of flat color).

Our Solution: We use a technique called Palette Generation. Instead of using a standard web-safe palette, we analyze your specific video to find the 256 colors that appear most frequently. We then use that custom palette to render the GIF.

Tech Glossary

Dithering

A technique used to create the illusion of color depth in images with limited color palettes.

Frame Rate (FPS)

Frames Per Second. Lower FPS (e.g. 10-15) keeps GIF file sizes smaller.

Looping

GIFs can loop once, a specific number of times, or infinitely. We set them to infinite loop.

Color Quantization

The process of reducing the number of distinct colors in an image.

Common Questions

Why is my GIF so huge?

GIF is an inefficient format. It stores every frame as a full image. Keep your resolution and frame rate low to save space.

Where's the sound?

GIF format does not support audio. If you need sound, stick with MP4.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can the video be?
We recommend keeping videos under 15-30 seconds. GIFs are not meant for long clips, and the file size can become unmanageable quickly.
Does it support transparent backgrounds?
This tool creates standard GIFs from regular video files, so transparency is not supported unless the source video (e.g., WEBM with Alpha) supports it, but typical MP4s are opaque.
Can I crop the video?
Currently this tool converts the entire frame. We recommend cropping your video in a video editor before uploading for the best results.
Why is the GIF larger than my video?
This is normal. Video compression (like H.264) is extremely efficient at storing changes between frames. GIF stores frames as separate images, leading to much larger file sizes for the same duration.
