Why Switch from WebP to AVIF?
WebP was introduced by Google in 2010 to replace JPEG and PNG. It did a great job. But in 2019, the Alliance for Open Media released AVIF (AV1 Image File Format), which is a game-changer.
AVIF typically produces files that are 20-30% smaller than WebP for the same visual quality. It avoids the "blocky" artifacts seen in WebP at low bitrates, instead producing a smoother, more pleasing blur that retains more detail.
If you are optimizing a website for Core Web Vitals (LCP) or trying to save bandwidth costs, converting your library to AVIF is the most impactful step you can take today.
