Understanding OGG Vorbis
OGG is a container format, and Vorbis is the specific audio compression technology usually found inside it. Together, they provide a fully open, non-proprietary audio codec.
Unlike MP3, which was burdened by patent claims for decades, OGG Vorbis was created to be free. But it's not just about politics; it's about performance. Vorbis uses a different mathematical approach (MDCT) that allows it to compress audio more efficiently.
At 128kbps (typical streaming quality), OGG Vorbis often sounds perceptibly better than MP3, with crisper highs and less "underwater" artifacts.
