Understanding M4A (AAC)
M4A is a file extension for an audio file encoding with AAC (Advanced Audio Coding). It was popularized by Apple as the default format for iTunes.
Compared to MP3, AAC uses more advanced mathematical algorithms to compress audio data. It can handle a wider range of frequencies (up to 48 channels) and uses better "bit reservoir" management to allocate data where complex audio needs it most.
The result is that an M4A file will almost always sound cleaner and more dynamic than an MP3 file of the exact same size.
